Another year in paradise-ish

WOW. I can't believe it's been three-ish years since the last post here.

What a crazy period. I told the Advertiser I wanted to leave and then they broke up with me. I made the executive editor, now former executive editor Wanda Lloyd, promise to list me as "eligible for rehire" since, you know, I didn't do anything wrong at the Advertiser nor was I even accused of having done anything wrong at the Advertiser. But then we got into that nasty "dispute" about who actually owned the HABOTN domain and, yep, I'm that guy.

So I guess my days at the Advertiser are over forever. So it goes.

Wanda Lloyd now works at Savannah State, the Internet tells me, as the chair of a mass comm department. Good for her. Not necessarily good for her students, who may be learning more about what happened in 1985 than 2015, but so be it. They still live in Savannah, Ga., and that's a plus. What a pretty place.

I'm still chugging along at my "new" gig. I don't want Gannett to get mad at me, so I'll just say that I'm still working in AUBURN covering SPORTS for a DOT.COM. Some stuff went down in October 2012 and I kinda became captain of the ship. It was odd, sure, but I had a young, principled collaborator with me. How could that go wrong?

I do miss the "old" HABOTN. Great group of people there, very little mud slinging, lots of inoffensive sarcasm. Now the Advertiser has no Auburn-themed online community and I think that's sad. James Crepea, who took over for me, does a fantastic job IMO. Good guy -- for a Yankee.

Anyway, much love to errybody except Wanda. And this other guy named Terry Manning, but you don't know him. Heck, you probably don't even know Wanda. It's the circle of life.

Here are some pics I'd like to share.

That is MY AMIGO, David. (Pronounced "dah-VEED") I met him in the Dominican Republic and he served me a lot of beers. I like him.

This is TEAM TATE. We have fun.

I once saw a man-sized mackerel eat a man (while a crowd of people watched) and NOBODY rushed to the guy's aid. America today, you know? And he somehow escaped, though he was down to his drawers afterward. Have a nice day, etc.

  1. Glad to see you still making the donuts. How are you learning to cope with life without furloughs?

  4. I'm not missin it. I visit HABOTN most every day. Somebody tell Norm we're about to flip the page.

At Savannah State, they paint Y E I L D in the road at campus intersection. Saw it with my own eyes.

  6. AU recruit hopes to win starting QB job. "As the second-string quarterback for EMCC, Franklin passed for 733 yards with seven touchdowns while rushing for 451 yards and nine touchdowns in nine games this season."

Seriously? He can't even start at a community college?! I think his chances are pretty good cause I'm not sure either of our starters this year could have done so at a community college.

  12. Mercy. I may have to move to Wyoming.

  13. February welcomed us with 73 toasty degrees yesterday in the Triangle. In contrast, the forecast high today in Laramie is 16. With snow. I'm liking the idea of moving to Wyoming more every day.

  14. Tomorrow is NSD. It ain't got the pomp and circumstance of Irony Day, but it will have to do.

  15. HELLOOOOOOOOOO!!! JayG, can you do us a favor and create a new thread on Hv1.0? We've reached 5,000 posts on your last thread and blogger won't let us post anymore. Muchos gracias.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Let's thank JayG for the new Hv1.0 thread and, while we're at it, even up the post count here.

  17. 1700+ posts there compared to 1 here. Who's loafing?

    ReplyDelete
  18. ok, it's now 2 here, just to keep the count even.

  19. let's see if this blog is working ok or not

  20. bingo! I wonder why jaygtate.blogspot.com is having so much trouble accepting posts

  21. Gus's success always seems to depend on the health of a single player. I remember when Lou Holtz, prior to 1978 Orange Bowl, suspended players responsible for almost 80% of the points the team had scored that season. Arkansas was a 20+ point underdog to Oklahoma, but won by 25 points. That's the kind of coaching I'd like to see from Gus. Adapt and win with who's available to play... healthy.

  22. I can't believe there isn't standing room only space left here. Where errybody at?

    ReplyDelete
  23. You really want to make the move here??

    ReplyDelete
  24. well, at least until Feng gets the other one repaired

  25. maybe we shouldn't let bubbs post here. After all, he's all but admitted that he broke blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  26. BTW - I like how I have the ability to post from the past here.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I hope you didn't break it! The post times on this thread make me want to eat lunch... again.

  28. I wonder if Arkansas has even bothered developing a Plan B. I think it would be cool for them to try a season without a head coach.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well on our way to a Beasley post here around the year 2020.

    ReplyDelete
  30. By then, Gus's contract will have been extended through the 2088 season.

I wonder if Nike-man will offer Kiffin the HC job at Oregon. I wonder if any coaches... besides Jimbo Fi$$$$her regret taking a new job now that Oregon has an opening.

  31. Sounds like Arkansas is getting close to a deal with Chad Morris. I've thought he would be a good hire for us if things went differently. But I was also on the Turner Gill bandwagon. Hopefully I'm wrong about Chad, too.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Turner Gill will be bringing his Liberty Flames to JHS next November. I hope he doesn't exact revenge for us forcing him into the Kansas job.

I think it would be funny if Phil Fulmer tried to hire himself as coach at UT.

  33. I've been concerned this morning about the ability of our 2018 QB/RB to survive without all the O-linemen who are leaving this year. I googled Auburn offensive line 2018 and This offered some hope.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The offensive line still causes me concern. Nice article, but I'm cautiously pessimistic.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If KJ and JS go to NFL to avoid getting killed behind an inexperienced OL, I think it will be time to throw caution to the wind and take all restraint off of your pessimism. Jeff Holland will be gone? DBs gone.

    ReplyDelete
  36. JS stays. KJ gone. Holland is 50/50. He's said he's staying, but if he gets a favorable evaluation I could see that changing. D line will be fine either way, though. DBs should be a step down but I'm thinking it wont be too bad.

O line is my biggest concern. It'll have a combined start total south of 40? That's not good.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Right now, my biggest concern is how far behind I am stocking shelves :(

  38. less than a month away from the 7th birthday of Having a Blast on the Net, aka Hv3.0, and I realized this is the one version of HABOTN where I have not yet bored you with my vivid recollection of the AUsome event on December 2, 1972. Let me know if you want to hear more.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Speaking of hearing more, I'm expecting to hear more crickets, but at least the post count is now back to an even number.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well, you asked for it. There have been three times in my life when I had zero doubt about the outcome of an Auburn football game before it happened, the first two occasions were in 1972. The first time was September 30, 1972. I woke up that morning and just new the heavily favored Vols would fall in defeat to my Auburn Tigers. This was one week after AU barely beat UT-Chattanooga, 14-7. The next time was Dec 2, 1972, the day of the Iron Bowl. I told my dad that morning that AU was going to win. We drove to Eden, NC, to spend the day with my maternal grandparents since the game wasn't televised in our area. As a teenager, I spent most of the day outside playing my Iron Bowl version of the game. Since it was just me and an official Auburn football (received from trainer Kenny Howard), I played a punt game where I just punted it back and forth with each "team" trying to get it as close to the goal line as possible. I have zero recollection of how I actually kept score, or even if there was scoring. My dad would come outside and give updates whenever he saw the score on TV. At the start of the 4th qtr he said it was 16-0 and it didn't look good. I told him not to worry, AU was going to win. Knowing my awful temper tantrums when AU loses (MrsTHT still knows those), my dad tried to get me mentally prepared for a loss, but I'd have no part of it. I knew the outcome. We left during the 4th qtr with the last reported score of 16-0. On the way out of town, my mom wanted to stop at a store, so my dad and I laid in the front floorboard of the station wagon (that's where the radio speaker was) trying to find the game on the AM radio, without success. About halfway between Eden and Burlington, we were listening to a scoreboard show and they announced the final score. My dad and i went bonkers and he ran off the road a bit and I thought we might end up in Haw River. When we got home I rang the great big bell that was outdoors (where or why he got it, I have no earthly idea). It was a glorious day that ended just how I knew it would.

Aw, man. You tricked me! Now we have an odd post count.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ok, we'll even up the post count... The third time I knew the outcome of a game was the 2010 Iron Bowl. Unlike the two times in 1972 where I woke up that day knowing, the 2010 Iron Bowl outcome was known from a day much earlier, I think maybe late July or early August, way before we had any idea AU would be a super great team that year. Normally, a 24-0 deficit would have me turning the TV off and going outside to burn off some steam. But not that day. I kept watching, getting giddier with every ua-t score in the first half (ok, giddy might not be entirely accurate), knowing how much more painful the AU win would be to all those bammers. Yes, I reveled in the reverse bammer-jammer cheer afterwards, and I have no remorse about that at all.

  42. I obviously don't know the difference between odd and even. I guess if I want to learn how to recognize odd, I should spend more time in front of a mirror.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Is this the first place you'll announce who AU has chosen to be their next football head coach?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Are we ever going to get a new football coach?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh rats! I've been waiting to see it here first and just now I realized AU hired a coach back in December. Boy, do I feel like a dummy.
